The road to Caniapiscau.

So, exactly what is it like?

.. has anybody seen the series Long Way 'Round with Ewan McGregor going from London to NYC on motorbikes? See that episode when their in eastern Russia on the "road of bones"?

The road to Caniapiscau isn't that bad, is it? I mean there's another giant dam complex at the end, that means big trucks to build it, so it can't be that bad...

Do I really need a 4x4 truck to climb over obstacles? Or would a ordinary FWD car with really tough tires (like gravel rally tires, they are TOUGH tires) be fine?

PS: How do you pronounce Caniapiscau?

When I was there last (Sept 2006) I was emphatically told that one needed a 4WD to drive that last bit. It was pouring rain so I didn't bother to check it out.
The way I was told made me believe that it wasn't just one of those liability-based warnings, that it really was rough. They said the "rough" was in the relatively large stones littering the road ("chunky gravel").
So a large truck would have no problem with it.
However, next time I am up there (passenger car) I will test it.
